As per sources, around 1.85 lakh students, mostly from New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune, appeared in one of the prime admission tests of India for higher education - CAT, conducted by IIMs for admission into its various centers. Furthermore, of all the students who took the CAT 2011 exam, 70% were male candidates. Unlike the previous years, the test, held this season, had two sections instead of three, with 70 minutes allotted for answering each one.
Over the course of time, the admission procedure has also undergone major changes at IIMs, with some of them replacing the group discussion round with a written essay test and personal interview. In addition, some IIM centers give more preference to non-engineering candidates and working professional over CAT scores.
This year, IIMs have also included gender correction. The step was initiated by the six new IIMs and those at Lucknow and Kozhikode who considered rebalancing the gender scales in the office. As such, IIM-Rohtak has decided to allot 20 marks to each girl and another 20 to a non-engineer candidate, while IIM-Raipur will add 30 marks to the overall scores of each girl non-engineer. Moreover, IIM-Lucknow will offer five and two marks to each girl and non-engineer, respectively.
